Alberta ION Lecture Series – Role of AI in GNSS – Friday December 12, 2025

We are excited to announce that we have been able to squeeze in one final event for the 2025 calendar year. We will have Dr. Sunil Bisnath from York University who will be speaking on the role of AI in GNSS and PNT.

Author
: Dr. Sunil Bisnath

Bio:Dr. Sunil Bisnath is a Full Professor in the Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering at York University in Toronto, Canada.  He has 30 years of experience working with GNSS. His research centres on precise GNSS-focussed positioning and navigation.  Previous to York University, Professor Bisnath held the positions of geodesist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Boston, Massachusetts and assistant research scientist at the University of Southern Mississippi, NASA Stennis Space Center, Mississippi.  He holds an Honours B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Surveying Science from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering from the University of New Brunswick.

Abstract:AI seems to be everywhere these days.  And while reports of its influence range from wonderful to existential, its evolving impact on specific industrial sectors and society is far from clear.  If history is a guide, predictions of the magnitude and speed of technological change are … rather inaccurate. This presentation will identify the elements of AI that have been used in attempts to improve GNSS technological performance.  How AI has been used in GNSS will be categorized.  How specific AI algorithms have been successfully used to make specific improvements will be explored.  Further subjects considered are the relatively slow embrace of AI in GNSS and PNT compared to other fields of geomatics and practical implementation concerns. While prediction of performance enhancements is obviously problematic, trends will be summarized and recommendations provided.
