Kristian Morin of Leica Geosystems gave a presentation on SLAM: A Technology for Unbounded Navigation.

Abstract

Modern survey and navigation technologies provide solutions for discrete, bounded problems.  GNSS gives you positioning outside, but not inside.  Laser scanners measure a space, but don’t position it.  To overcome these barriers, SLAM (Simultaneous Location and Mapping) combines GNSS, Inertial, Imaging and Laser Scanning sensors to provide a continuous navigation solution inside, outside, underground or in complex environments.  This presentation will give an overview of the techniques used in SLAM.  It will present examples of how SLAM is used in the Leica Pegasus Backpack to unbind navigation problems both indoors and out.
